The ReAnimators Podcast Episode 30
TOPIC
Faith and Religion in Games
GUESTS
Christian Sheppard, Animator at Junction Point
Caleb Zart, Animator at Raven Software
Paul Robbins, Animator at Insomniac Games
With both Rick and Ryan off experiencing the true meaning of turkey, I recruited the ghosts of jobs past to help me out this episode. And even though there is a common adage about talking politics and religion being the best way to lose friends, I've found the exact opposite to be the case with these three. So while I know people can be wary of discussing religion, I think it is a great area that can be explored when crafting more serious, fully realized games.
So after we give our definitions of religion and faith, we speak about their history in games as well as their potential. We ask if games should have a religious or spiritual agenda, and what is our moral responsibility as game developers. We also wonder what it would take to create a digital soul for a game character.
So give it a listen, and let us know what you think. We tried our best to touch on most major beliefs so as not to alienate or anger anyone too much. Unless you are addicted to WoW, in which case I'm pretty sure I alienated you something good.
Show Notes
Extra Credit expands on Mass Effect 2 ethical dilema

GDC 2013 Animation Bootcamp
Last spring a conversation sprung up on twitter about game animation not being as well represented as it could be at conferences world wide. From that discussion, a handful of us got together to do something about it. What we present here is the type of game animation conference I have always dreamed about attending, with an equal focus on both the craft of animation and it's overlap with game design.
I proudly present the GDC 2013 Animation Bootcamp taking place March 25th! This is an opportunity to grow both our craft and our involvement with all things game dev and I hope to see you there!
And spread the word!

Moving Back to Pennsylvania
Zenimax made me an offer I couldn't refuse. Starting in December I will be Senior Animator at Zenimax Online on a new, unannounced MMO.
The bonus is that my wife and I will be moving back to the state that still feels most like home: Pennsylvania. We have really enjoyed all the adventures that the Pacific North West has afforded, but getting back to a smaller metropolitan area and closer to family is going to be fantastic.
WB Seattle has been a great studio to work for, and my limited time with them betrays the amazing amount of talent and potential it has to create some top notch games. The first game I worked on with them is Lord of the R
My Thoughts on Game Development
Over the last couple of years I have really embraced everything game development and design, which has taken away from the time I used to devote to drawing. Which, looking at my gallery is pretty apparent.
Recently though I've been taking what I've learned or what I've been thinking about and become more active in getting my ideas out there. So when #AltDevBlogADay was being formed, I jumped at the chance to be a part of a gaggle of game devs talking about their process. The majority of the posters are programmers, but if you have any interest getting into games or peering behind the current, you should make that site a part of your daily tr
